Instructions for Use

Pattern Blocks allows students to use concrete materials to model pattern rules.

To use Pattern Blocks, click on a shape and drag it into the workspace. Select a rhombus by clicking on it. Once selected, the rhombus can be moved to any location on the workspace. Click on the tools on the top panel to select and drag, rotate, find more information about the rhombus, or to clear the workspace. To remove a rhombus, drag it to the recycling bin.

Have students make a table to track the perimeter of each shape. Have students write a pattern rule to describe how the pattern starts and how to extend it.

Interactive Calculator allows students to extend pattern rules.

To use Interactive Calculator, find a pattern in an existing table. Input the term and term number to extend the pattern rule. This number will appear in the calculator window. The number pattern becomes shaded on the hundreds chart.
